Why Do I Sound Irish?

Having never before binge watched a series with thick British and Irish accents I was unaware of how it would effect my speech. Apparently spending over twelve hours with Birmingham gangs in Peaky Blinders makes me sound as if I frequent a pub and live on the Queen's side of the pond. Never before have I so easily slipped into a Irish accent, and I've tried, believe me, because that's a cool accent. Now I have found myself doing so unconscionably while both singing and talking. I was aware that I was sensitive to the speech patterns of people with accents, I have adopted both Southern and New Jersey accents from speaking to people. I was not aware that watching TV could do this. It is not just the accent that has stuck with me though, I find myself thinking about the characters days after my Peaky Blinders binge has ended. I speculate on the content of the third season, and short of dreaming about the world the characters inhabit, I am still very connected to the show. I actively worry about the characters. I think about their futures and wonder if they'll live long enough for cirrhosis or cancer to kill them, or if a unmarked grave awaits these fictional characters. Dark? Yes, but this is not a show for the fainthearted among us, or those with weak livers.

Cheers
