I will freely and willingly admit that I'm no stranger to
binging. Not binge watching, mind you, but binge gaming. And I think that's
part of why I enjoyed, and still am enjoying, binge watching Game of Thrones.
It's less of our world, and more like the world of a game, with dragons*,
massive battles, amazing feats, all things that are missing from the world that
we live in now or never existed in it in the first place. So, it's no wonder
that I was hooked from the beginning, and will probably go back and watch it
again when I finish. And, once a new season is released, I'm probably going to
keep watching. Mostly because, let's be honest, it's probably not going to
really end until almost everyone's dead.
The real issue for this binge, though, wasn't keeping active,
as many would assume. It was sleeping. Game of Thrones is a show that really
makes you want to keep watching once you start. And, since every episode is
about an hour long, you'll occasionally miss things when you're just sitting
there, watching it. Sleep is probably one of those things. Sure, once you're
tired, you're probably going to check the time, but just watching it without
checking the time at all, you're not going to notice when it suddenly goes from
somewhere around 12:00 PM to somewhere around 6:00PM, because there were
dragons and zombies and people dying left and right and you just can't stop
watching. While that probably won't be as much a problem with the book binge,
although it may be, it's probably going to show back up for the video game
binge.
Would I binge watch Game of Thrones again? Absolutely. I'll probably be
doing so soon, when the next season comes out and I need a refresher, although,
if things keep going the way that they're going right now, I'm not going to
need a refresher, because there's barely going to be a main cast to remember. After all, valar morghulis.
* I have been asked by a friend better versed in the history and mythology of dragons and their relatives than myself to clarify that the Game of Thrones dragons are actually classified as wyverns, as they have only two legs as opposed to four. Not an important note, but an interesting one, nonetheless.
